Town Concern.—A meeting of the Grimsby Town Council was held on Monday night, the Mayor (Alderman Veal) in the chair.-The common s*al of theboic ugh was affixed to a contract with Mr W. Etadall for fixing and removing tha iron stalls in the Central Maiket for the sum of £52 per annnm.—Mr South worth (chairman of the Market* Committee) moved that the recommendation of the Markets Committee that Mr Cook’s (market keeper) salary should ba raisod from £30 to £55 be adopted.—Mr Melhuish moved, as at* amendment, that the increase of salary of the market keoparshould te £20, not £25.—Mr Nuttall seconded the amendment.—Mr Brocklesby supported the amendment cn the ground that Mr Cook had only asked f ar £30 advance (M Question ”)• — Alderman Smethurst cn* sidered that it would bo mean, contemptible, and dishonest to refuse to give the market keeparthe increase of salaiy recommended by the Maiket Committee. — Alderman Croft also supported the recommendation of the comsmtlce. — Mr Doughty, supporting the original motion, said the market-ktep r had to collect sob imalleumsas 2d and 3d.—The original motion was carried by 11 votes to 3.—The Mayor said the nexo business wee to receive and confirm the report of th Highway Committee recommending the acceptance of Messrs Fetch and Brown’s lander for cleansing th* private and public cesspools in the district f or the sum tf £S£6 6s Gd per annum for one or three year*, at th » option of the UrbuU Sanitary Authority, and t» affix the common seal of the borough to the con-ract —The Mayor added that the tender iu qu-stio was the lowest received. — Mr Melhuisb propose that the matter be teferred bick to the committee.— Mr Doughty would like some arrangement to be mad xa ith Mr Hadfield to go on with the work. He sac Hide the moticn that the matter be referred back.—Mr Nut fupported the motion.—Mr Goodwin looked upoa it a a childish proceeding to give the contract to Messrs Flt; tcb and Brown, and then, acting upon an outside rumour.to give it to some oneelse.—The Mayor suggested that the matter should be adjourned for one wee*.— Mr Southworth : Mr Hadfield, the late contractor, is in the room. He might be asked if he would crotinae to do the work until a successor was appointed.—Mr Hadfield replied in the affirmative — Ultimately th9 Mayor’s suggestion was adopted,—Mr Henry Smethurst asked if anything had been done to improve the Peppercorn road.—The Borough Surveyor answered in the affirmative.
