A representative of the Chicano Federation, head quartered in San Diego, has arrived in Albuquerque to focus nationwide attention on and support for the ef forts of Reies Tijerina to gain freedom. Joaquin M. Ticonderoga, who describes himself as the general director of a move ment to establish the federa tion as the national umbrella for every Chicano organiza tion in the country, said he is in Albuquerque primarily to assist the Tijerina family with their campaign to ob tain a pardon for the Alianza leader. HE SAID he has written to Chicano organizations all over the country and that meetings are being held this week in Los Angeles and Houston to determine what assistance can be given. Tijerina is presently in prison on conviction of state charges stemming from the Tierra Amarilla raid after the U.S. Supreme Court re fused to consider his appeal. Ticonderoga said Luis Na tividad, of the federa tion, had asked him to ex press “disbelief and distress over the fashion in which Tijerina has been treated.” He said Natividad noted the news media nationwide gave enormous coverage to the slaying of Mrs. Martin Luther King Sr. and “‘yet that same treatment was not afforded a national Chicano leader.” TICONDEROGA SAID the federation has written Gov. Bruce King imploring him to pardon Tijerina. He said he is certain some New Mexicans will ask why representatives of a California organization are involved in the matter. “Our display of concern and desire to aid Mr. Tijeri na is triggered by one of the constitutional principles which we as citizens of this country have the right to concern oursleves with the principle that this coun try would afford ‘liberty and justice’ for all”
