Lords’ Hearings Refused Six appeals against conviction and sentence in the £ 2,500,000 train robbery case were dis missed yesterday by the Court of Criminal Appeal. The six were found guilty: for the trial of conspiring to rob and robbery, and were each sentenced to 30 years’ imprisonment. No applications were made on behalf of James or Wisbey. A second application on behalf of Biggs for leave to appeal to the House of Lords against sentence Was also refused. 1 Security Swoop In S. Africa Mr. Abraham Fischer, Q.C., who led the defence at the sabotage trial of Nelson Mandela — and others in South Africa was detained by Johannes burg security —_ police today. Mr. Fischer, n nwned person under the Suppression of Communism Act, was taken from his home in a Johannesburg suburb [ to] security branch headquarters Detectives sealed off the sixth floor of a block of chambers, regarded as the headquarters of Johannes burg's lawyers, where Mr. Fischer has his office. They first refused to allow any other lawyers to enter their offices on that floor, but later relented, although two detectives stood outside Mr. Fischer's office, refusing admission to anyone. ISLAND VISIT Mandela, former leader of the banned African National Congress, was gaoled for life with seven other men on June 12, after being convicted of plotting the violent overthrow of South Africa’s Government. Mr. Fischer recently visited ‘Robben Island, where Mandela is held. Mr. Fischer's detention is the latest in a massive security sweep in several major areas in the past 10 days in which more than 3 men and women, mostly whites, have been arrested.
