Gunnisons claim, pre-fabrication has meant the concentration upon economy units turned out with little consideration for the aesthetic. U.S.A.The Amalgamated Clothing Workers of America arc feeling very proud of themselves, for the final units of their vast co-operative housing development arc now' occupied.This marks the culmination of 25 years of planning and construction, and the development (see photo, bottom) now houses nearly 10,000 person4- in about 2500 units, erected at a cost of XA8.9 20,00.The Amalgamated Houses, as they are called, were started in New York's Bronx in 1926. and the units have been built without recourse to government or other aids beyond the organisation's own initiative and enterprise.The first project was completed in 1927-28. containing 318 units and 1187 rooms. New projects were added steadily in the Bronx in 1929. 1931. and in 1941. Since the war. new projects have been added almost annually.GUIDING LIGHT.One of the summer attractions in-Eastbourne (U.K.) is a visit to Beachv Head's 142ft. lighthouse, of which a birds’-evc-vicw is obtained from the top of the clitf. The task of ensuring that the 274,000 candle-power beam flashes its friendly warning in all weathers keeps the crew busy There arc four of them, of whom three are on duty at a time, working an 8-week stretch with a month ashore. The light is visible for 16 miles in good conditions, and a warning explosive is electrically fired every five minutes in fog.
