PRITCHETTStars And Stripes Staff Writer“The Ray Anthony Band Variety show,” the first all-Navy entertainment unit sponsored by the new Fleet Entertainment Section of Pacific Fleet Service Force, will leave soon for the forward areas to perform for Navy, Coast Guard, Marine Corps, and Army personnel at shore bases and aboard ships.Featuring a juggler, a “Madcap Magician,” a eomic-imper-sonator, Jerry Colonna’s violin-playing double, and the “Hottest Band in the Pacific,” the 26-man troupe played its farewell 1 o c a 1 performance Thursday night at the Royal Hawaiian.Ray Anthony again proved himself one of the best hot trumpet men in the business. Freddie Canestrelli thrilled the audience by balancing himself atop a 25-foot ladder while juggling four hoops. Former NBC violinist Clarence Melter played skillfully. Chuck Fonda, of the band’s «ax section, offered some amusing parodies. Larry Storch delivered a hilarious takeoff on a Hawaiian hula maiden. Earl Parchman and the “Tune-Toppers” registered welt with songs and mugging.Stanley Slejko, string bass player, is a survivor of the USS Franklin carrier disaster.The Navy Fleet Entertainment section, in inaugurating its new policy of augmenting USO-Camp shows from the States with servicemen’s units organized at Pearl Harbor, reports it has selected a sure-fire hit in its ooen-er.N E R V E—Juggling four hoops while balanced atop a 12-foot ladder is a cinch for Federico Canestrelli, M3/cl, who used to perform in the Ringling Bros.
