Marvin L. Hersey, field repre sentative of the American Red Cross, of St. Louis, Mo., will visit the Seward chapter for review and advanced instruction in First Aid and Water Safety, arriving here on July 6th for a two weeks school of instruction. The week begin ning July 6th will be devoted to the lay-instructor course in first aid, to which only those who hold advanced First Aid certificates are eligible, and the following week to the water-safety, life-sav ing and swimming courses. “As part of the general Red Cross program the ‘learn-to-swim’ slogan is even more important dur ing these times and should be em phasized by county chairmen in charge of swimming and water eafery programs,’ Mr. Hersey stat ed. Mr. Hersey, First Aid, Water Safety and Accident Prevention field representative for the Red Cross Midwestern area, was Y. M. C. A. physical director at Beatrice, Nebr., three years, then at Omaha, two years before joining the Red Cross National staff in 1942. He was graduated from York college, York, Nebr., and obtained his master’s degree in physical ed ucation from the University of Iowa. While with the Beatrice Y. M. C. A. he was first aid and wat er safety chairman for the Gage County Red Cross chapter two years, and has extensive experi ence as a first aid and water safe ty instructor there and in Omaha. He was athletic coach at Stroms burg high school from 1934 to 1937. In his present position Hersey assists midwest chapters in the promotion and standardization of their accident prevention services and in the training of volunteer leadership for safety programs. Seward has carried on a Red Cross swimming program for the past fifteen years and there are very few children and young peo ple in this community who cannot swim. It is hardly necessary to mention the benefits of this health ful recreation which is available through the summer at the Sew ard pool. Classes for the towns in the county are held daily except Sun days at 9:30 a. m. for the free les sons under Red Cross instructors. Also classes at 4:00 p. m. each day. Water-safety classes on Tuesday and Thursday at 7:30 p. m. Adult swim classes will be held on Mondays and Wednesdays at 7:30 p. m. There is still time to register for the lessons and learn to swim this summer. Get out your suit and come down and enjoy our fine pool, and bring along a picnic lunch to eat in any of the beautiful parks adjoining or near the pool. Seward Independent.
