At 10 o'clock on thenight of June 30th the Pioneer stages were stopped some twenty miles beyond Placerville, on the Washoe route, by six highwaymen, who took twelve silver bricks and a quantity of gold coin from Wells, Fargo A Co.'s treasure box, and then allowed the stages to pass on. A Virginia City police officer fired two ineffectual shots after the robbers. When the stages arrived in Placerville, Sheriff Rogers started in pursuit of the robbers. Deputy Sheriff Staples and a mannamed Itaunev arrived at the Somerset House.*and were informed by the landlady that the gangwere there. Thev entered and called upon them to surrender, but the robbers fired a volley, killing Staples and wounding llanney. A shot from Staples wounded one ot the robbers, and the others escaped. They declared they were good Jeff. Davis men, and would never be taken bv Union officers. They gave one ot' the stagc-drivers the following receipt :Received of Wells, Fargo A Co. the sum of dollars, said amount to be used in securingenlistments in this State for the Confederate sen ice.
