R E. Neathammer, has praised the request by Rep. Dan Rostenkowski, D-8th, for extensive hearings in the U.S. House “as soon as possible’’ on the Consumer Communications Reform ActRostenkowski has written Rep Harley 0. Staggers, chairman of the Housecalling for the hearings.“The recognition by Con gressman Rostenkowski of the need for hearings on whether recent decisions of the Federal Communica tions Commission will lead to higher rates and poorer service for most telephone users is very gratifying,’’ Neathammer said. He is president of the Eastern Illinois Telephone Corp., as well as heading th«* IllinoisTelephone Association, whose membership includes 60 companies providingservice in the state.Neathammer said the Consumer Communications Reform Act would reaffirm the national goal of the Communications Act of 1931. which calls for universal telephone service of fered within the economicreach of all Americans.The nation’s 1,600 independent phone companies, the Hell System companies, and many of the industry’s unions are united in their support of the bill.Also officially on record in favor of congressional action are the National Association of Regulatory Utility Commissioners, represent ing various state utility reg ulatory bodies, and the American Farm Bureau Federation.The bill's proponents believe the Federal Communications Commission is pur-suring policies that will hit particularly hard at the pocketbook of the typical user of residential telephone service.Eiirsch. ees from )eral arts re: Joan 18 N.
