Degman of Springdale read the following paper giving the history of one family which has long taken a part in the affairs of this section. It is of interest not only to those directly concerned hut to many who today know the occupants of “.Maplewood Farm:”Peter Degman was born in Dublin, Ireland, In 1740, and died in Sussex county, Delaware, in I77ti. His son, Peter,'was born in Delaware May 1st, 17*16. Through his mother's industry and frugal management young Peter was enabled to obtain a fairly good education, at the same time mastering the ship-carpenter trade, then, as now, a very important industrial calling. iAbout D87 he came West, arriving at [ . Maysvllle—then Limestone—some time i in 1788, and lost little time in looking out for a suitable location for the pursuit of his calling—shipbuilding and school-teaching. Having selected a spot in Kentucky county, Va., near the ' mouth of the Cabin creek vallev, and become somewhat established, he returned to his native state, Delaware, and was married March 1st, 1792, to Ruth, daughter of Major Henry and Snsan Killen. Coming to his Cabin creek home, they immediately set up housekeeping.About 1800 this tract of land, where the writer now lives, was purchased | and a small round log cabin erected; followed a year or two later by a substantial hewn-log dwelling with two rooms, and a large stone chimney outside on the North end, which contained a splendid fireplace that took in a five-foot stick of wood, backlog. The joists, rafters and all inside finishing were cut out with tlie old-time “whip or upright saw, by hand labor. The old chimney and fireplace have long since been replaced by a more modern one on the inside, and the original two rooms have been added to in such a manner as to give the whole surroundings quite a Twentieth Century appearance. On this farm at this place were born to Peter and Ruth Degman eleven children,—seven sons and four daughters— all of whom have passed to the Great Beyond, the la-t to depart being the late Hon. t\ P. Degman of Campbell countv, Kentucky.Rutii Killen Degman died May 10th, 1836. Four years later, July 21th, 1840, Peter Degman was married to Rose Kllen Love of Brown county, O. He followed the rivor i:i various callings until about j 1838 or 1839, when he went into partnership in the grocery business with the late Samuel D.
