The trouble, as you remember had its Inception in the attempt of the poltre to break up the University of Islam. A few days after the affair the Detroit Sunday Times said “But the checking up of the University,which followed the riot, brought to light material which might, under some conditions bring hectic days to this country if its 10,000.000 Negro population should take It up seriously.” (Of course we know that the “hectic” days Just mentioned would be for the whites because the blacks have had nothing but hectic days in this country).1 then recalled the advice of my grand-father who spent a third of his life in slavery, ’’that whatever the white man tries to keep away from you is the very thing that you need.” I summed the situation up thus:—Islam Is something that will make our people stick together—even In the face of ln-stant death and secondly that the white man fears and does not want us to have Islam in this countTy. Without more I Came to the conclusion that Islam must be of great benefit to us and I then and there resolved to Investigate and get all available lnformatiln aboutIslam.I learned that the religion was Introduced to the people of Detroit in 1930 by Prophet W. Lying, stealing, gambling and drinking are absolutely prohibited. 80 much for the gentle virtues of Islam.But the most striking uspect of Islam which appeals to me is the fact that It is a MILITANT RELIGION demanding FREEDOM. JUSTICE AND EQUALITY. And I believe that this is Just the kind of religion that the black man needs here in the United States. Christianity with its “turn-the-other-check policy has gotten us Just exactly nowhere. Last week three black men were lynched. Christian white men lynched them. The white Christians will do nothing about It and the Black Christians will do nothing about It. A religion which allows the one to lynch and the other to submit to being lynched is not worth very much. We had just as well he plain about It. Christianity is not tho black man’s religion; it was given him by the e white man. Why? Because it the only dope that the white man could give the Black man to put his mental faculties In profound sleep, an make him therefore submissive to the will of the white man. Of all the damnable things that the white man has done to the black man, giving 1dm Christianity was the worst because It made him willing to sufTer the hell the white man prepared for him on this earth with the hope and expectation that if he endured to the end he would reap his reward in heaven after death; but that if he did not hold out until the end, after he had been dead for quite some time he would he resurrected and cast Into a burning bell to smoulder forever—by a Merciful Father! Now Islam Us just what we need to wake us up. It teaches us to fear no man, fear nothing—not even death. No Moslem is afraid of death. This Is what we must get into us. Do you think for a moment that lynching could exist among a people who he tiered that FREEDOM, JUSTICE AND EQUALITY constitute the sum total of Its religion and that It is noble to die for his religion? Moreover, Islam destroys the inferiority complex. It makes a man stand upright, fearless in the knowledge that he Is the supreme being in the universe. This is what we need to arouse us from the deep sleep wherein we have dreamed that the white man is our superior and god. Islam teaches that the black man Is the god who made the devil and will destroy him.
