Lieut. I William E. Shipp, who resided among I t us for four years, hud been killed in th -battle near Santiago, on Satur— 1 day. Many were the expressions of i regret that were spoken and a num-. ber of telegrams of condolence were sent to the deeply bereaved young . wile, for whom our people have the * profoundest sympathy. Lieut. 8 lipp j lived at Charlotte at, one time and the Observer of yesterday pays the i following strong tribute to his'chur- * a :ter: 'To think of a n a iniflcent man like | Lieutenant Shipp being stricken down thus is horrible. Thpre could have been no finer gentleman, m r braver officer in the army, for he was the purest type of either that could be Imagined tie was a man of superb physique, erect as an arrow; t splendid Lead and handsome features. , No finer specimen of man—mental, moral and physical—ever wore his country's uniiorm. He was a cultured, intellectual, re- t fined and high-toned gentleman of k fine address and bearing—uatnre's nobleman. Well may the Old North State deploie the loss of such a son. 1 The Observer also gives a biographical sketch of Lieut. 'J He niMde a fine record as an officer 9 and on good authority it is stated v that, no officer stood higher in the s army than Lieutenant Shipp. When t the question of a brigadier general r being appointed from North Caro- f lina came up, a prominent Hepublf- c can of this State who holds merit | and country above party, wrote a -j strong letter to Seuaror Pritchard a and said that “ii the bpst man in the ii State and one equal to any tu the a UuPod Stat.es was wanted, Lieutenant Shipp should ha vs the appoint- s raent.” vOne who knew the lieutenant well says that he has uot known in his life a higher type of honorable gentleman and brave, efficient soldier. ^ Among ids many sterling virtues there shone that most rare one, modesty.Li ii ten ant.
