! SHOT DEAD.The Celebration at Reno, Cass Tt\ County, Ends with a'J Bloody Tragedy.j —n John Hunt Shot Dead By Davidy Lane.0 Tha Fourth a! Rih.A large number of people assembled nt Reno on Saturday to celebrate the , Fourth. S. B, J. Bryuut, the music man of this city was oritor of the day, and so for as we are able to learn, Mr. Bryant delivered a very able and excellentoration. Mr. B. is possessed of an excellent voice, so Ih^t no person hud any ditlicillty in hearing him. The Declara-; ti hi was read by a little girl and VM received with much applause. A select choir furnished soinc excellent music, abort speeches were made and a royal b.u-kct dinner served. A platform was erected for a dance which was terminated just before sunset in a very shocking r manner, tlie particulars of which, so far as we are able to glean, are about as fol-, lows: A young man by the name of John , Hunt, about 21 years old, son of David | Hunt, became full enough to presume he ( was general manipulator of the day’s proceedings, and in order to demonstrate the fact, proceeded to ride bis horse U]mii the dance platform. David Lane, son of widow lame, living in the same1 neighborhood, and about the same age , with Hunt, was marshal of the day, and , exercised his authority by putting Hunt . off tlie platform. Hunt endeavored toride liis horse upon the platform once or . twice again, when Lane told him to keep I off or ho would shoot him. Hunt re-I plied he would cut his g—d d—n heart out and tied nphis home, pulled a knife and came at Lane. Lane immediately pulled a revolver and fired, killing Hunt instantly, the ball entering the right side and passinc clear through the body. Lane immediately mounted a horse and [ rode away towards his home in tho di-I reel ion of Atlantic. Search is being , made but as yet tliere is no clue as to his whereabouts. It would appear the , killing was, to a certain extent, justifia-. ble, but the reason he left was the fear of being roughly handled by the Hunt Cunily and their friends. We have also learned that the usual concomitant of such deeds existed in the way of an old feud. Tlmt on a previous accasion Hunt hud drawn knife on Laue but nothing was done about the matter. Such was the terrible termination of the Fourth at Reno.Reno is a village situated In Edna township, Cass county, about 20 miles from this city, and is in what has been known for 30years as Edna Grove.LATER.A gentleman who saw the whole tragedy says Lane was not Marshal, but was interested in a refreshment stand, and that the killing was clearly in self-defense. Lane has not been arrested.RENO.FourtU of July Celebration.Special Correspondence,The largest number of people that eyer tssemblcd in the south part of Cass county, uiet at Reno on last Saturday for the purpose of celebrating the Fourth of July, und the majority' of them seemed to have a good time. E. A. Baer wu.-otticer of the day, and Joliu Archer and Nathan Sellers marshal. The exercises were opened by a song which was very well rendered.Prayer was then offered by Rev. R, B. Hunt. The Declaration of Independence was , read by Miss Ttllic Archer, aged eight years. The little girl read eleurlv and distinctly, and with such expression as to excite the surprise and admiration of her audience. When the cheering had subsided, and more music had been furnished by the choir, an able and clo- ( ipientoration was delivered by S. B. J. Brvunt, of Atlantic. The people occupied themselves from 1 12 to 1 P. M., in a manner very similar to that in which the same hour is spent | on ordinary days.In the afternoon Rev. R. B. Hunt delivered an excellent address, and shortly after its close, the wild Hioughypnphen-bophens appeared on the scene. They were led by Marshal Sellers and a band j of very loud musicians, while Lieutenant Urnbersbanks brought np the rear. The roll was called, several speeches made and songs sung by Jeremiah Big-stomuch and others; then the outlandish band stampeded amidst uproarious and deafening cheers. This was the lost ‘ thing on the programme, that was carried out.You already know of the sad ending , orour Fourth, I have no desire to describe it.The members of the choir deserve much praise for their efforts to entertain _ the assemblage. W. T. Read led the 1 singing and Miss Tillie Steen presided ‘ atthc organ. Tho singing and instrumen- 1 tal prices were all very good indeed.J. F. L. «
