Thursday, July 6, 2006COMMUNITY NEWS EDITIONPAGECauses Concernscentury, they can stillAfterkeep the family on the farmBY JILLIAN AUSTINEven after 100 years, the Brackenreed family farm is still in business — and the family is expecting 500 people to attend the festivities celebrating a century of farming this weekend at their farm near Justice.“To me the celebration is about the pride that we made it this far, and we hope people can share the same dream.” Leanne Brackenreed said. “It’s important to celebrate because agriculture has made for a difficult time for everyone.”She said that recently, the farming industry has put a bit of a strain on farmers.“There are benefits and drawbacks to farming, she said. “It really draws the family together.” But with the recent strain on profits, she said they have looked to alternatives, such as different crops and an increase in the number of cattle.Even with the ups and downs, Leanne said she wouldn’t trade it for the world.“It’s been a life I would never leave,” she said. “I don’t know what it would be like if I had to leave the farm. ”Preparing for the centennial celebration has brought relatives, friends and the community of Justice together.“It’s amazing how everyone pulledtogether to help. It gives you a real sense of pride and a real sense of wanting to share,” Leanne said.“It is a whole community affair really,” said Lila Paddock, whose grandfather bought the farm 100 years ago. “There are relatives coming from the West and we’re really looking forward to it.”The farm was purchased in 1906 by Albert Brackenreed who ran the farm with his wife, Mable. The two had six children: Hudson, Earl, Lena, Ethel, Jane Ann and Inez. In 1945, Earl purchased the family farm with his wife Josie. They went on to have five children: Foster, Lois, Lila, Darlene and Leslie.In addition to grain farming, Earl also raised chickens, pigs and cows A new house was built in 1984, but the original farm house still stands.Leslie took over the farm in 1990, where he still lives with his wife, Leanne and three children: Nolan, Karli and Angela.The festivities begin tomorrow, where people will camp out at the farm. On Saturday there will be a come-and-go ceremony, followed by a tree-planting ceiemony, games and barbecue.
