Anytown — ‘an attempt to bridge the understanding gap” — had 17 delegates from the Scottsdale area participat ing in the annual week-long experience. This year’s theme for Any town was “Who Am I?” with workshops, discussion groups and other activities focused on fostering understanding. One of the delegates, Laura Marshall, described the ex perience as aimed at the understanding gap, adding that “It was an opportunity for youth of all different races, re ligions and ways of life to come together in an atmos phere of love and acceptance, to learn to understand them selves and each other. “It was the most emotional ly stimulating experience of my life,’’ she asserted. She quoted the Anytown cheer as best describing the spirit of the week: ‘Understanding one another, so that each one becomes our brother. That's what it’s all about, this Any town.” Anytown was begun in 1956 by a group of people concern ed about the prejudices of Society. It has since grown to include two camps, one for northern Arizona in Prescott, and one for southern Arizona in Tucson. Anytown is run by a board of directors and is sponsored by the National Council of Chris tians and Jews and 20 other or ganizations. They include the American Jewish Committee, Arizona Public Service, Lea gue of United Latin, American Citizens, Valley Christian Center, Each high school in the Valley, as well as each spon sor organization, is eligible to send delegates. The delegates are chosen for their diversity. There are scholarships avail able for those who cannot af ford the $60 fee. Any town activities included yoga or nature hikes at 5:30 a.m., hillside sings and dis cussion groups on the theme. Workshops were held on subjects such as race rela tions, police and the com munity, foot massage and man-woman relations. There were optional re ligious presentations by repre sentatives of the Sikh, Baha’i, Mormon, Jewish and Quaker faiths. There were culture and talent nights. Speakers includ ed folksinger Norm Heard, psychic Louis Rousseau and State Representative Bill Mc Cune. Delegates from the Scotts dale area included Miss Marshall, Joy Berry, Jeff Christiansen, Darius Duallo, Eleni Demas, Brooke Daley, Nina DeLange, Carolyn Eisenhardt, Claudia Feitler, Russ Fega, Tannis Fox, Doug R. Frazier, Shawn Hantle, Valerie Hing, Helen Peterson, Beth Parson and Mark Ryan. Rosie Greenwold, one of the co-directors, is a counselor at Saguaro High School.
