changes reports the Convention as follows:‘•The Republican Convention for the Johnson County Circuit Court District was held at Iowa City on Saturday. George It. Strublc, of Tama county, was unauimoutly , chosen as the nominee.’'Th* D. M. T. It. R.The completion of the Great Railroad Rridgo across the Mississippi at Keokuk should be a source of congratulation to all Jowa. The foundation stone of this stupendous work was laid on the 10th day of June, 1*09; tlio superstructure completed ou the 1st of April, 1871.The first train crossed on the 14th , of April, last; and it has since been formally tested with a load of five i hundred thousand pouuda on each span. 1The iron work weighs in round numbers 3,000 tons. It consists of eleven spans, the total length being 2,192 feet. The diaw is 380 feet long, weighing 410 tons, worked by a beautiful little Merrick engine. This enormous mass is moved easily as a garden gate; opening or closing in two minutes, with the regularity of . clock work. Those of our readers who have had occasion to make a trip cast, and remember the tedious omnibus and ferry transfer at Keokuk, will be pK*ased to learn that trains now cross the Mississippi on this magnificent bridge, aud go directly through.Onr growing Stale has just re ason to bo proud of her railroads, reaching iu every direction, none of more importance than the new through lino just opened to the east and south, and for which we predict au immense popularity. The falc of the Dcs ^loines Valley depending on Chicago alone as a inarkit has o ten been shown; and the attention of onr jeoplc again and again called to the importance of a St. Louis connection. We now bave two routes to St. Louis, the North Mi.souri aud the Des Moines Valley, the distanve from Ottumwa by the foriper beiug 277 miles, by the latter 25^ miles—the route via Keokuk being twenty-five miles the shortest; and as this line now forwards freight without breaking bulk, wo sec no reason why it should not do the larger part of the business.Nor will the tiade with St. Louis alono be 1cncfittcd. For, in additiou to the already popular route to Chicago via the C., B. A Q.; the new line just opened over the T., 1*. A. \V., via Giliman, to the same point, will ho in active competition for this lucrative business ; while we have no doubt the Great Wabash, over whose road the Red Line, the Great Western Dispatch, and the Star Union Line run their through cars, will be in the field stronger than ever. In fact the advantages thrown opeu by ibis enterprise aio almost incalculi-1 boFew western cities enjoy the rail-, road facilities afforded to Keokuk ; four roads already center there, and two more aro to bo completed this fall. At present, twenty strictly first class passenger trains leave and arrive daily, passing through tho Un-iou Depot, running withoni change to Log'ansport. Columbus, Toledo, Fort Wayne, Chicago, Peoria, St. Louis* and Cinciunatti eastward, and all nonilH on the Dcs Moines Valley Railroad, Omaha and the Pacific• coast, westward.—[State Regiscr, Juno 27.
