By The Examiner staff The Independence Woman’s Civic Club is searching for pieces of a nearly extinct style of china that was used originally at the Vaile Mansion almost a century ago. When Harvey M. Vaile died in June 1894, a full set of his chins, 140 pieces, was sold at the estate sale for about $25, says Jean Gossett, co-chairman of the Civic Club’s committee to locate the china. The committee is searching for the china in conjunction with the Vaile Restoration Committee. “We're going to try to find pieces of the original set first,’ Gossett says. ‘Then, if we don’t get enough pieces to make a presentation to the estate, we’ll buy a set of china from the same era and leave it at that. A serving tray believed to be of the original set has been recovered and is on loan from the Daughters of the Revolution. The china is a tan color with a dark brown leaf design, accented with light blue flowers. It is em bossed with a pinwheel design along the outer edge. On the back, the words “Arundel” and ‘‘Vaerian’’ appear with the designers seal. It is not known which name is of the maker and which is of the pattern. Civic Club members are hoping that someone has pieces of the china hidden away in an attic somewhere or some antique dealer has a few pieces in his shop. Finding the china for the 31-room Vaile Mansion is the Civic Club's first project since the election of new officers in June.
