Jailer fired, investigation continuesSHIPROCK — A jailer here was fired last week for “serious personal misconduct which brings the tribe into disrepute,” tribal Justice Department Law Clerk George Chavez said.The jailer, Melvin McCabe, was fired following an investigation of his conduct by the Public Safety Division’s Internal Affairs office.Shiprock Chapter officials sent a memo to Chairman Peterson Zah on June 27, asking for an investigation into the alleged rape of a Shiprock jail inmate. The in-in December of 1983. Mr. McCabe’s termination was in connection with this alleged incident, tribal officials have said.Investigation of the rape allegation was made by both tribal and BIA offices.* ■' *1 ‘ * twT' ‘ \ * .According to BIA and tribal officials, the BIA has turned over information on the investigation to the U.S. Attorney’s office in Albuquerque.No criminal charges have been filed against Mr. McCabe or anyone else in connection with the alleged incident at the jail. Tribalofficials say Mr. McCabe may appeal his termination.In their memo request in an investigation of the alleged rape, Shiprock Chapter officials also ask for investigation of several other complaints about the Shiprock Police Department.The request is signed by ManuelBenallie, Sr., Wilbert Tsosie and Richard T. Begaye, the president, vice president and secretary of the chapter. The memo doesn’t specify any other complaints about Shiprock police.
