Lt. Wm, Newlon Is Awarded Oak Leaf ClusterBy direction of the President, the Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of an additional Air Medal was awarded by Lt. Gen. Millard F. Harmon, commanding United States Army forces in the South Pacific area on June 1, 1944, to First Lt. William D. Newlon of Plentywood, as pilot from March 5 to March 26, 1944. A picture of the presentation was in the Plentywood Herald, June 16, 1944, and the announcement of the presentation was carried in the same paper.A bronze Oak Leaf Cluster is awarded for the meritorius achievement while participating in sustained combat operational missions of a hazardous nature during which an area is traversed where enemy anti-aircraft fire is effective or where enemy fighter patrols are habitually encountered. The mission for which the award was given was with the 13th A.A.F.Lieutenant. Newlon was previously awarded the air medal. He has returned to the South Pacific combat zone after a rest period in New Zealand. He has completed 21 combat missions dropping 46 tons of explosives over Jap-infested territory.Lieutenant Newlon attended M.S.N.C. for three years and left when the call of Uncle Sam came. He is the nephew of O. Kay Moe, who is superintendent of the training school.
