He was tired after a full day in the street and his fingers slipped on Ihe smooth brass. The shell struck the sidewalk, and Immediately thers wna a loud explosion.Young Rhinehart fell unconscious. His abdomen had been ripped open by a fragment of the brass. John dropped too. Two of his toes were blown off. And presently mothers. who came rushing from near by tenements, found three other boys wounded. Donald Brady. John's brother. years old. had deep cuts on both legs; Oeorge Rhinehart. years old, a brother of Louts, suffered leg wounds also, and Charles Kerack. 9 years old. of 304 Hast Seventieth street, had part of hla upper Up blown away and was cut sbout Ihe body and legs also. Dr Hamilton was called from Flower Hospital to attend them.He found Rhinehart dying and hurried him to the hospital for an operation. The boy died two hours after being taken there.With the exception of young Kerack. the other injured boys also required hospital treatment Keruek*s face. It was eald. would be disfigured, but aside from ihe danger of tetanus no fear was fslt for hla safety. *From the molher of ihe Brady boys Policeman Wynne of the East Sixty-seventh street station loomed that the •hell case was brought from Franco and given to a member of her family by a veteran of the Stxty-nlnth Regiment. The powder charge was withdrawn and It was believed the war relic was harmless. An Investigation made last night, howovei*. proved that the detonating cap. charged with fulmlnlto of mercury. had not been extracted.Two other accidents were reported as a result of the celebration of the Fourth In Manhattan. Mrs. Mabel Johnson. 32 yearn old, of S42 Haggeny place. The Bronx, was shot In the chest while hanging clothes on a pulley line. The bullet wan spent and she was not seriously In-Injured.Policeman Lee Meyers of the East 131th street station, the other victim, was shot through the hand while trying to wrest a pistol from a boy who had been firing blank cartridges. He was badly burned. The boy escaped.
