DEATH FOR IJ. J. .Mendenhall of lt;learwater Held On Charge of Murdering Mr.C. W. Kliot and Daughter.Tampa, Fla., July 5. (Special)—The funeral and burial of Mrs. Chas. W. Eliot and her daughter. Miss Susie Eliot, was at Woodlawn Cemetery yesterday. The services were conducted by Rev. C. W. Duke, who made no reference to the tragic manner of the death of the two women, for whose murder J. J. Mendenhall of Clearwater is held.The charred remains of the two women were found in the road leading from Tampa to Clearwater on Saturday morning, their death having been accomplished on Friday night, near midnight.Illicit love for the dead girl, Miss Susie Eliot, is charged as the motive for commission of the double murder which has aroused the inhabitants of the two communities.Mendenhall, at Clearwater jail, declines to discuss the tragedy.The only complete and concise statement is from Guy Stempel. the chauffeur who drove the car, which was burned with the bodies of the slain women. His statement made on Saturday, is as follows:“In Tampa Friday between 5 apd 6 o’clock, while at the Dairy Kitchen, Mr. Mendenhall approached me and asked if I could take him for a trip Friday night to Green springs.
