Illustrated above is the coin which has been cast in honor of Major John Wesley Powell, which will be sold during this the Centennial year of thePowell expedition of the Green and Colorado Rivers. Coin may be obtained in silver or bronze. It depicts Powell, the river and the Seal of Utah.New coin honors Maj. PowellThe 100th Anniversary of the exploration of the Colorado River by Major John Wesley Powell has been commemorated in a special issue of John Wesley Powell Centennial medals.The medals, featuring a special copywrited design by sculp tor Don Dow, will be 1 3/8” in diameter. The original design features a profile bust of Major Powell with the Colorado as it flows through the crevices of the Grand Canyon depicted in the background. The official seal of the State of Utah is on the reverse side.The medal is being struck in commemoration of the lOOt'h Anniversary of Major Powell's daring boat trip down the Green and Colorado Rivers. This adventure which opened the Colorado was part of an expedition to the Rocky Mountains begun in 1887. When Major Powell reached the Colorado River in 1869, he began a three-month boat trip through the GrandCanyon—-the first recorded navigation of the dangerous and colorful river. His work lead to (he establishment of the U.S. Geographical and Geological Survey lt;;f the Rocky Mountain region.Silver medals (.999 fine silver) will be serially numbered and available in limited quantities.
