SHORT PUTTS—Bubba Southard has been revealed as the mighty man who eagled No. 5 last Thurs day at Oak Hills. Club Pro Chick Clark says it was only the second time in history such a feat has been accomplished. Dave Davis pulled it off in the 1940's. The long fairway which veers to the right over a gulley is one of the more difficult to drive. Southard report edly drove within 70 yards, then put it in the cup with a 7 tron. The slanted green also makes the shot almost unbelievable and is cer tainly equal to a hole-in-one on most of the holes. . . I've heard of mouse traps, snare traps, and sand traps, but a golfer trap is some thing new. Beware, all ye un lucky linksmen, who happen to shoe into the rough no No. 9. While trodding the weeds Thursday, a certain duffer all of a sudden found himself standing neck deep in wa ter. Apparently, the water had washed away the ground beneath a very thin crust of sod and grass, leaving a perfect trap for the un suspecting. And, there wasn't just one, but two, and maybe more. (P.S. the ball wasn't there either.)
