BY CHRIS COCHRAN Times Sports Correspondent The time-honored adage, what a difference a day makes, can certainly be applied to the Upper Adams 14-year old Babe Ruth baseball teams’ performance the past two days at the Babe Ruth District Tournament. Having suffered a 15-2 loss to Mifflin County Sunday night, Upper Adams faced a do-or-die situa tion with an invite to the state Babe Ruth tournament on the line. In fine fashion Upper Adams took care of business in only five innings, beating Gettysburg 16-3 Monday night at the Gettysburg Ree Park. With the loss, Gettysburg is eliminated from the tournament. Gilbert “Bubba” Reinhardt's leadoff single in the top of the first foreshadowed the type of offensive production that Upper Adams would get from the top of its order throughout the game. Following a groundout, centerfielder Brent Black blasted the first pitch he saw into deep right field resulting in a stand-up triple to score Reinhardt. With a runner on third, offensive powerhouse Ashton Taughinbaugh kicked a single. For the game Taughinbaugh would go 3-for-4 with three RBI. Down 2-0 after the first inning, Gettysburg responded defiantly with the bottom of its order. With centerfielder James Vanmeerberee on first, Travis Parone smacked a double, picking up the RBI. Following was number eight hitter Joe Sollenberger, who copied Parone’s performance by winding up on second and adding an RBI to his stats. Left fielder Kyle Spaulding would hack a 1-0 pitch to shallow left resulting in a single while scoring Parone. However, this would be the last Gettysburg player to cross home plate for the evening. Leading 3-2 after two and a half innings, Gettysburg’s defense began to unravel. With Upper Adams' left fielder, Craig Tipton on first, Matt Johnson hit a pitch to shallow left that bounced off of Gettysburg shortstop Tim Newman's glove. Both Tipton and Johnson would later score on two separate wild pitches. After a scoreless third inning that saw both teams exhibit an array of great catches and textbook style putouts the score remained 5-3.
