Segregated SchoolsNo doubt us a response to apparent Sow intelligence of Aborigines discussed above.. Aboriginal children in Queensland were placed in segregated schools whore the stated aim was to take them to Cirade 4 level, with an emphasis on bnsie skills and too' subjects.Betty Watts, Senior Lecturer in Education at theUniversity of Queensland, reports that this truncated programme with its emphasis cn rote learning was net successful for a large number of children. She claims (hat it could not really have been hoped r.o be successful Aboriginal schools, segregated from the rest of the community were also established in ne.W Recently, acme of these schools have been closed down on the assumption that a wider environment is more conducive t.o meaningful education, and tbnt free movement, between the cultures is pretty-well a right, anyway. However, eleven aeg-legated schools still remain, with some talk of closing one of them.
