At half past eight o’clock on the morning of April 20th the tornado broke upon Aberdeen and vicinity. The Red Cross chapter, physicians and busines men immediately sent trucks and automobilee out follow ing the path of the awful tornado and picked up the victims and brought them in to the Pame, Cole man and Baye Infirmary, which was converted into a Bee Cross hospital. Physicians and surgeons from Amory came over on a special train, fur nished by the Faiseu Railroad, and J. M. Acker, Physicians from Okolons, Hagaten, Egypt and other s came very promptly and did they comid to relieve the poor 30 eeers. Eighty-nine patients were admitted and treated, with only tdeatha Considering the na ture of the wounda and the fact that every one of them was infected al ready when brougght off the field to the hospital, the death rate war as low as could be expected. The hract of the burden was borne by Drs. Coleman, Paine and Boyd, cheerfully end ebsolately without iion. No physician was paid one cent. No Red Crage work er was paid one cent during the many weeks of hard work, except Miss Mae Richardson, the Home Secretary, who happened to be on salary. No registered nurse was paid over $6 per day and ex penses, and no colored nurses paid was paid exceeding $3 per day. If bail we would build to these tireless Red Cross workers, nurses and physicians a monument whose spire would keep company with the stare, for the meble deede done for the sake of humanity. At the last meeting of the execu tive committee it was voted to em ploy a Public Health Nurse for her whole time. She will be under the supervision of the County Health Officer and will gradually develop a generalized service. She will visit the sick and demonstrate the prep aration of nourishment, the proper way to give w bath, the handling of the sick in order that there will be no spread of the diseases. _ In many ways she will make it easier for the over worked diretor and see that his orders are carried ontrto the letter. She will do everything in her power to help the tuberculer poor, the feeding of babieanot.under the doc tor’s care, holding mothers confer ences, organizing mothers clubs and doing allothy uplifte work pos sible.
