The’ Rev. Richard’ R. Price, of St. Mark's Episcopal church at Big Timber, has sent the Daily Tribune a clipping from the Ravalli Repub lican' which tells of the death of Earl Rusk Carruther, 69, a former resident of Dillon, Rev. Price says ‘that his father, the late Samuel S. Carruthers, was an Oregon Short Line (later Union Pacific) agent for at least 20 years, the family coming to Dillon about 1904. For a time Earl operated a garage just north of where the Eifel store now stands. The Ravalli ‘Republican of June 116 has this account of the death. Mr. Carruthers was born March 14, 1889, at Denver, Colo., and at tended ‘school in Colorado and Montana. As a youth he was,a professional ‘horseman, later turn ing to mechanical work on auto machinery and equipment. On Dec. 16, 1914, he married Hazel Bowman, daughter of Mon tana pioneers in Missoula. In re cent years he was successful in manufacturing and selling, on or der, a device for removing heay wheels and tires from trucks.‘ [he had invented while working for thes army at Fort Lawton, Wash, during World War II. ‘The’ Jane ton’ brought him an army . He had been interested in places ‘mining for about 20 ‘years, having claims in the Hughes creek area and was in that vicinity Friday, June 14, when taken oll. About noon he ‘complained of not feeling well and laid down under a ‘tree, later, suffering a heart ‘attack and rolled down the hillside. Word of this death was relayed through devious. .ways...With tele phone. lines..down. in the upper Hughes Creek ‘area ‘a companion had to travel about 14 miles to telephone the Forest Service office, which in turn, notified the sheriff's office, A rescue party from Hamilton, reached the’ body about 6 p. m. and it took nearly four and a half hours to return to Hamilton. The sheriff commented , ‘that while bringing the body out ,they had to lay down the stretcher and go ahead to find a way to travel. And at other times they had ‘to swall in, the rain-swollen creek. Survivors include the widow; three daughters, Helen Carruthers, Ravalli county deputy clerk of court; at home, Mrs. Marion Mus grove, Butte; Mrs. Gail White, Great Falls; mother, Mrs. Luella ¥. Carruthers, Fairmont Minn.; eight brothers, and sisters ‘living outside Montana and five grandchildren. The funeral was held June 17 with Christian Science services, at Hamilton.
