«■ ^ ■ ► -. - —Five Hundred Dollars Damage for Refusing a Colored Man's Vote.—A suit which lias heretofore excited no little interest, has just been decided in Wnrren County. At the election for state officers on the 14 th of October, 1850, a “colored man” nrunod Jesse BeckJey, soinc few shades darker than alabaster, offered his vote at the Fourth Ward polls, and it was refused by tho Judges, Rufus Iv. Paine, Win. II. Glass and Michael Clearly, tijwii tho ground that ho was not “a citizen of the United States,'1 nccordiug to the moaning of tho act of Congress. Beck ley had taken several friends with him as witnesses to tho tender of his vote, and its refusal by the Judges, for tho purpose of testing the question in the Court, in case he wus not }*or-iuilted to vote. Upon the same day, after his ballot had been rejected, lie commenced suit agaiust tho Electiou Judges, laying his damages at $ 1,000. Tho city assumed the resjKnsibility of the defence, and instructed the City Solicitor to contest the claim. The case was tried three times in tho Courts of this city, and iu each inslnnce the jury failed to ngn-c. Ujk»ii a motion by Beckley’s counsel, the \onuo was changed to Warren county, nnd the case«anio up for trial on Monday morning last. The city was represented by Jude llart and Mr. Probnsco, nnd the plaintiff by Messrs. Gul-choli nnd Chambew. The case occupied tho aUentiou of the Court for nearly two days, when the Jury rotumod a verdict for the plaintiff of Jive hundred dollars. A now trial was granted by the Court.— Cin. Gazette.
