CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) — A Kanawha County man Thursday became the second person to plead guil ty to conspiracy and other charges made in connection with the bombing of an elementary school. “In an appearance before US. District Court Judge K.R. Hall, Michael Wayne Blankenship, 30, of Campbell's Creek, entered guilty pleas to four counts of an indictment returned Jan. 17 by a federal grand jury. Delbert Lee Rose, also of Campbell's Creek, entered guilty pleas Jan. 21 to con spiracy and other charges in connection with the bomb ing of the Midway Elemen tary School. Both his, and Blankenship's pleas were made in plea bargaining agreements, federal of ficials said, Damage ,to the school, which was dynamited last October during the height of the the texthook protest, minimal, officials said, No one was injured. Four other persons were charged with conspiracy in the incident, including the Rev. Marvin Jioran, a denouneer of the controver sial textbooks. Also Indicted were Jeannie Lyon and Larry Elmer Stevens, and Melvin Dickerson, all of Campbell's Creek. The four have pleaded innocent to the charges. In another development, related to the textbook con troversy, Judge Wall dis missed a suit, challenging the constituionality of the schoolbooks adopted for use in the Kanawha County school system. In his ring, Hall noted that he could find nothing that would equate the use of the Lexis as an attent es tablishment of religion. “A complete reasoning of the imagination is necessary to find that plac ing the books and materials in the schools constitutes an establishment of religion contrary to the rights con tained in the Constitution,” he said. The suit had been brought by Gary and Shonet Williams of St. Albans, claiming the books piotouting Con stitutional safeguards and their right to freedom of religion.
