SYMPHONYTRIUMPHSby Stew ZweikoftThis past weekend this campus was blessed with the presence of the Syracuse Symphony Orchestra who played some superb music. On Friday, January 25, the Rock Ensemble performed in concert. Raying for the most part classically influenced pieces with a bit of a jazz-rock flavor the ensemble gave a tour de force performance. The piece that impressed me the most was the one by Faure Pavone for Orchestra, Op. 50 which featured some beautifully done English horns from the Ensembles. Phillip MacArthur. Conductor Calvin Custer managed to add some tasteful recorder work in addition to the nice classically influenced guitar he played throughout. Unfortunately he almost ruined the last piece of the evening by trying to do a long guitar solo. However, nothing detracted from the impressive performance the Ensemble gave.Custer conducted the Symphony Orchestra in a Pops Concert which featured a young Korean violinist Dong-Suk Kong. Kong played with such precision and technique that it is hard to believe that he is just twenty years old. He negotiated Tchuihovsky's Violin Concerto in D, Op. 35 , with unassuming ease. The second half of the concert featured two originals by Conductor Calvin Custer who seems to have great talent at writing and arranging.I'm sorry but I could not attend the I classical concert due to busy schedule but I I am sure it was equally impressive.
