St. Mel’s Varsity cagers, who remained in the thick of the Chicagoland Prep league race with a 70 to 67 win last Friday night over St. Viator, tackle tough DeLaSgile this coming Friday night on the Meteors’ home floor. Saturday St. Mel comes back home to meet Ma rian Catholic of Chicago Heights. De La Salle is tied for second place with St. Ignatius, both sporting 62 league rec ords. The Knights are just one-half game behind with 52 record. St. Patrick holds the top spot with a 7-1 mark. De La Salle’s attack is cen tered around its fine 6-8 cen ter, LaRue Martin, who is re garded as just about the best player in the Chicagoland Prep circuit. _ Coach Bob Slingerland is hopeful he’ll get another spark ling performance Friday night from senior forward Ron Smith. Smith turned in the best games by a St. Mel player in many years last Friday night when the Knights defeated St. Viator. He scored half of his team’s points, 35 to be exact, and had 17 rebounds. He was outstand ing both from the field and free throw line. He connected on 13 out of 21 from the field and was good on nine of 13 free throws. Tony Bowden, St. Mel senior, starter at forward, was side lined because of a foot injury but his replacement, junior ,Ken Kolovitz, came through with a commendable performance. He scored eight points on four bas kets. Bowden is expected to re turn to action Friday night. Coach Singerland was not overly happy with the overall performance of his team against St. Viator despite Smith’s fine individual perfor mance. The Knights held an eight or 10 point lead through out most of the game but dis sipated most of it with erratic passing in the late stages of the game. He says they'll have to be extra sharp to take the measure of the Me teors Friday. St. Patrick, in winning its seventh game in eight starts, got another fine scoring perfor mance last Friday night from Tom McKiernan, 5727 Race. He collected 19 points in the Sham rocks’ 65 to 47 triumph over St. Ignatius.
