By MERLING. HODGSON Beadle County Agent Arthur Haugen, Huron, has been appointed ‘Beadle County weed supervisor by the County Weed Board. Art has been a resident of Kellogg Township for 56 years, until moving to Huron this past year. He has served as county performance supervisor, under the present county committee. Art is acquainted with our weed problems in the county and from his background of experi ence in farming is interested in helping other farmers fight weeds in this area. We plan to do some demon stration work in weedy pas tures, small grain and shelter belts this coming season; also to continue our attack on the noxious weed problem. Members of the Beadle Coun ty Weed Board are Harry Mill er, Bonilla; R. Emmett Welsh, Carpenter; and Christy Hofer, Carpenter. This coming March a new member will be elected to fill the unexpired term of T. A. Rogers. Agriculture Meetings Open The following meetings have been scheduled in co-operation with our county extension staff. All meetings will be held in the Beadle County Courthouse ex cept where noted. All meetings Start at 7:30 p.m. Jan. 27 — Livestock diseases, latest information on animal diseases and status of control programs by Dr. George Chaf fee and Dr. Fields of the Live stock Sanitary Board. Feb. 10—Soil, characteristics and qualities. Feb. 17—(In Farmer’s Union Building), soil sampling, fertiliz ing and cropping recommenda tions. Feb. 24 — Production testing of beef cattle, discussion by farmers who test, meat inspec tion, film and talk by USDA In spection Department. March 2 — Chemistry of the animal body and feeds, why one feed is better than another. March 9 — Wintering cattle and proper rations. March 16 — (in agriculture department, Huron High School), the right electric motor for the job and how to main tain it, Beadle Electric and agriculture engineering depart ment, State College. The following sessions are part of the Farm Show and will be interesting and educational. Held at the Huron Arena. Feb. 4 — 10:00 to 11:30 hog judging, 11:30 demonstration and comparison of grades of market hogs, Armour and Com pany will furnish the carcasses, and Armour personnel will give the demonstration. Feb. 4 — 8 p.m. beef cutting demonstration by Terry Baker of the National Livestock and Meat Board. Feb. 5 — 10:30 sheep show and a judging contest open to everyone. Oyster Stew Fifty-seven turned out for the annual crop livestock oyster feed. The group enjoyed the pic tures and experiences of Dave Merry while he was in Den mark as an International Farm Youth Exchange delegate. Newly elected to the board of directors of the County Live stock Improvement Association were Leland Show, Cavour; Earl Haigh, Cavour; and Bob Olson, Huron. Other directors are H. A. Miller, Alpena; Art Olson, Huron; Lloyd Hill, Jr., Huron; and Lawrence Fried richsen, Huron. Newly elected directors to the Crop Improvement Association were Grant Flowers, Wolsey, and William Eckmann, Cavour. Other directors are Carl Larsen, Wolsey; Robert Ingle, Cavour; Francis Martens, Wessington; John Radcliffe, Wessington; and Donald Olson, Huron. Farm Show On Tuesday afternoon, Feb. 4, you will have an opportunity to buy top quality bred gifts. We have consignments from the following breeders: Hampshire: Kenneth Ander son, Mitchell; Gene Longkeek, Volga; Gordon Hull, Tulare; and Darrell Burma, Wessington Springs; and Darrel Vik, Cen terville, Poland China: Arnold Mis chke, Hazel; Homer Ponto, Brookings; and LaVern Walter, Fedora. Duroes: Donald L. Mark, Vi borg. Chester white: Arthur C. Ramse, Lennox; Roger Osthus, Centerville, Yorkshire; Charles Olson, Irene; Paul Ramsell, Huron; Lester Kahre, Wolsey; and Myron Schliem and Son, Sioux Falls. In the sheep division we will have registered bred ewes in the Hampshire, Suffolk and Co lumbia breeds. This is arranged through the South Dakota Sheep Producers Association. These two events offer an ex cellent opportunity to buy new bloodlines and high quality stock. They would make a good project for the youth of our area.
