“Tommie” Thompson Is Tuning Up His Ship in Anticipation of Race Sun day With Imported Airman Tommie Thompesn, student at the state university here, who is paying his way through school by giving Oying exhibitions and taking passengers aloft for joy rides, has insured a challenge to Captain Low ell Verex, English “ace” here for the National Guard flying circus next Sunday, for a 25-mile air race The challenge grew out of an argument between Verex and Thompson as to the relative speed of their planes. Each uses a Stan dard plane of the same size, and type. Saturday at the Chamber of Commerce air drcus, spectators noticed that Thompson's plane was almost as fast as that piloted by Verex, although the latter's ma chine is motored by a 220 horse power Liberty Six, and Thompson's by a 180 horsepower Hispano- Suiza, Thompson, this week, is in stalling a new motor, the same type and size of his old one, for the race. It has been stored here in a garage until Thompson felt that the old motor had performed long enough. Thompson declares that although the planes are of the same type and size, he will overcome the 46 horsepower handicap caused by the difference in the motors by clever flying and by the condition of his new engine.
