WATSON—Thomas Watson was born November 1816, and died at his residence near Pacific City, Franklin county, Mo., December 22, 1876.Mr. Wafron was born in Franklin county, in -which he. also spent and ended his earthly ex istence. That he. was “an honorable and re-spected dtizext and highly esteemed by a large circle of friends,” was clearly shown by the attendance at his funeral. He was a member of the Masonic Fraternity and was buried accord-ingfto the custom of that ancient body. This writer never saw Mr. Watson except as he lay in the majesty of death. I am informed that he was a member of no Christian denomination. A short time before his departure he turned and gazed into the face of a friend as he remarked: “I atn‘ almost played out, I would be so happy if I could ta^k,,, The same friend informed me that he repeated with great unction the prayer: “God be merciful to me a sinner,” With the poor, imperfect* compassion of my naf lure, that prayer from a dying man would have called5forth mercy from me. I will not believe that a man is more compassionate than God. In the evening when the laborers are rewarded, my eye shall not be evil if the goodness of the Master shall reward the laborer of one hour, like myself, with a penny. As we stood freezing around the open grave and the wailings of the widowed mother and fatherless children echoed in the deep, cold vanity we felt the force of the lines:“Life is but a winter’s day,A iourney to the tomb.”God Mess Mrs. Watson and her family, and may the meeting occasioned by the death of the* husband and father, help us aU onward to a final meeting heaven.
