South Idahoans in the Services DECORATED AT SUN VALLEY | JEROME — Chief Ph.M. L. T. Spengler, son of Mr. and Mrs. L. C. Spangler of Jerome, recently received the purple heart award at Sun Valley naval hospital where he is recovering from wounds received on Sal an June 16, 944. The scene of the presenta tion was not new to Chief Spangler, who cnt many hours, aiding J. T. Spangler over the slopes of Sun Valley be fore entering the service. He is now chief master at arms at the hospital. A graduate of Jerome high school in 1939, Chief Spang ler joined the Navy that December and went to Iceland, returned to the United States and was sent to the south Pacific where he spent two years. He saw action on Guadalcanal, Tarawa, and Ti nian before going to Saipan. After he was wounded there, he con tinued to treat other casualties. His awards include the Presiden tial unit citation ribbon with one star, earned at Tarawa FLIES THROUGH JAP FLAK Sgt. Bob E. Graves of Twin Falls was making his 22nd mis sion over Japanese held territory before he met opposition, but then he found plenty. As radio operator and gunner on the Texas Kate, his bomber was flying recently over Iwo Jima in the Bonin Is lands when it was hit for the first time. The heavy flak darkened the sky and hit most of the planes in the formation, making a hole in “Texas Kate's’ wing, breaking through the tail turret and de stroying that gun. However, none of the crew was injured and the ship made it back to the base, WOUNDED IN LUXEMBOURG Pfc. Claire Osborn, 28, has been wounded seriously in Luxembourg while serving in the infantry, the war department informed his par ents, Mr. and Mrs. Jess Osborn of Twin Falls. Private Osborn has been overseas since November and in the service about a year, having last been home In July, 1944. He is a former resident of Jerome and Buhl, where his sister, Miss Edith Osborn lives. PROMOTION TO W. TAYLOR The rank of staff sergeant has been received by William E. Tay lor at an American air corps) WITH BOMBER FORCE porstion in England, according to Cpl. Lyle K. Weatherbee of Twin Word received here by his mother, Fails recently was assigned to an Mrs. Helen C. Taylor. Eighth air force Liberator group that is now bombing Germany. A “nember of one of the older units of the Second bombardment division, the 392nd group completed its 200th mission over enemy targets last Armistice day. Corporal Weatherbee attended Kincaid rural high school. He entered the service in November of 1943, receiving his runners wings in August, 1944. Ala wife, Mrs. Leondine Weather bee, and their three children, Nell, Kay, age five, Kenneth Lee, age three, and Sandra Carol, age two, and his parents, Mr. and Mrs. John ®. Weatherbee, live in Twin Falls. TRAINS AT HUNTER COLLEGE Apprentice Seaman Thelma Moon is the third child of Mr. and Mrs. David Moon of Twin Falls to go into the service. She is taking basic training at Hunter college in New York. Miss Moon, a graduate of Twin Falls high school, has a brother, Tech. Sgt. David Moon, in England and an other, Marine Lt. Bill Moon, tak ing combat training at Pendleton, Calif. Sergeant Moon graduated from high school here in 1937, and his brother completed school here two years later. LT. DAY AT SEA Lt. (j.g) Gordon Day is now serving with the Navy at sea. It has been learned here. Lieutenant Day formerly was Boy Scout ex ecutive of the Snake River Ares | council here, later he was Scout executive at Reno, Nev., where his family now live. (iN GERMAN PRISON CAMP | First Lt. Dean H Sanner of | Bubl is getting slong well in a| German prison camp near the| Baltic sea, he said one hand written card to his parents, Mr. and W. R Sanner, Buhl, Lieutenant Sanner was shot down over Germany last August while he was piloting a photo plane. The photographer was killed at the time. The card was dated Nov. 13, 1944. Last previous word from Lieutenant Sanner came a month or so ago when he said he was in a temporary prison camp. His wife is employed at the C. C. Ander son store in Twin Falls. OFFICERS MEET EN ITALY Finance Officer Lt. Milton Powell, after 18 months away from the United States, has met his first pre-war acquaintance overseas in Italy. He recently found Warrant Officer Lyle Good night, also of Twin Falls, he wrote his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Milton St. Powell. Lieutenant Powell formerly was an assistant bank examiner with the national banking system. He is a graduate of George Washington university, |
