While an old mill was being de molished at Blackburn a portion of the building suddenly collapsed, kill ing three men and seriously injuring four others. The names of those killed are Edward McManus, A. Han ley, and 8. Duckworth. A writer in the “Otago Daily Times states that the Christchurch- Nelson road is quite traversible by motor-cars. This, he says, is quite apparent from the fact, that a gentle man has recently driven through to Dunedin from Nelson without the slightest mishap, a heated bearing when he arrived at the top of the North East. Vailey, close to Dunedin, chasing the only misadventure met with on the run. The motorist left Nel son on Tuesday, December 29th, and drove down by way of Blenheim, Kaikoura, Culverden, and Christ church. He describes the scenery met with as ‘magnificent,’ and as being well worth a visit by those in search of Nature’s beauties,. It is not, however, to be thought for one moment that the road traversed is a macadam one, and the motorist com plains that the difficulties met with on the stretch of road. are largely added to by the small amount of in formation, furnished by the Tourist Department as to where roads lead, and the condition of the surface of and roads. A bookmaker informed ‘Asmo deus,” of the “Manawatu Times,” recently that since the reinstatement on the racecourse of the membery of his calling, he had paid over £ 1000, in fees and had cleared something like £ 8000 sterling. And yet there are infatuates who imagine that they can “beat the books’?! There is a sugar famine in Levin. The shopkeepers have 800 bags at Foxton, but can’t get delivery for some reason.~ It costs 28s.per ton delivered at the door in Levin, by way of Moxton, and.38s by rail, and the shopkeepers prefer the former route. Private information has been re ceived from Tokio to the effect that a Japanese squadron will visit Aus kalenta early in 1909. There will be some eight or ten vessels, and Auck land, Wellington, and Lyttelton will be among the ports of call. The hotelkeepers of Lyttelton have unanimously decided not to apply for an extension of the closing hour from 10 p.m. at the annual meeting of ‘the Licensing Committee in June next. One biet there is on all New Zea land racecourses at’ present, and for that blot the racing fraternity ‘have to thank those who know very little about racing. The re-entrance of the bookmaker is distinctly a retrograde step. He had been banished, and, it was hoped, would never return; but what may be termed an unholy alliance gave him new life, and there he is now, with his many-hued coat, his stentorian voice, his sian, and his bag.” The totalisator is without doubt the least objectionable of all kinds of gambling. If there must be gam bling on the racecourse—and we frankly confess that we do not think that there could be horseracing: with out it then by all means let us have only the least objectionable —‘Ma taura Ensien.’* A curious instance of the veracity of ocls is reported from a farm in the Rangitikei district’ (says the “Wairarapa Daily News’). Attempts are made every year to raise a few ducks. They are successfully hatched out and kept in the duckyard until strong enough to be let out to for age with their mothers There is an ideal creak close by, and this is the duck’s unhappy hunting ground. ‘When the young duck waddles home after a day on the creek some of them are found to be minus a foot, some have lost two feet, and in a short time, one of a clutch of ten or a dozen there are only three or four whole and sound. Most of the grip pled ducks are killed off by the owner to end their pains, but one or two usually survive, and, amongst the poultry on the farm there’ are to be seen ducks hobbling a round on one foot and a stump. The large eels in the creek evidently consider ducks’ feet, a peculiar dainty, and are ‘al ways on the look-out for a fresh sup ply. Sometimes mangled young ducks are found drowned, having presum ably been dragged under the water and held there while the eel enjoyed his tit-bitat leisure, ‘It is more than probable (says the Dunedin “Star”’) that the Alhambra Theatre will pass into other hands, Messrs Fuller are now considering an offer made ‘by an American evangel istic society, who are forming a cir cuit of missions after the style of the central mission in the principal centres throughout Australasia. _Sir Robert Hart, the veteran In spector-General of ‘the Chinese Cus toms, says that he, once, in Pekin, sat out a ‘banquet that lasted for seventeen consecutive hours. There were 125 courses, and he tasted them all. This would seem ‘at first’ sight to take a lot of beating. Yet Mr Ward, the American envoy, who tried to interview the Emperor Hieng Fung in 1859, tells how he ‘was enter tained to a dinner that lasted from noon one day until six o'clock on the evening of the day following. The total number of courses is not given, but Ward mentions that he had to give in after partaking of 198 dif ferent dishes: ‘whereupon his hosts wondered greatly’—presumably as, his abstemiousness. Probably, how ever, the TEsquimaux banquets last longer than any others, and the quantity of food swallowed is also proportionately greater. Ross records that seven of his party of natives once ate continuously for thirty three hours, during which time they consumed 200lbs of seal meat. Best Summer Drinke: Kops Eng lish Ale and Stout, non alcoholic, and Kop’s Concentrated Ginger Beer, All Storekeepers.* FOR APPLES AND PEARS.—The ravages of Codlin Moth can be avoid ed by the cheap and simple process of spraying thoroughly with Swift's Arsenate of each,” See’ that you obtain 'Swift's.?’ The Temperature—At three o’clock this morning the thermometer outside this office registered 57 dégrees. We are pleased to say that quite a num ber..of the young ladies, and, gentle men were also much charmed and in terested when they inspected the up to-date furniture and beautiful fur nishings at Lock's, the well known Universal Provider, and complete and cheapest house furnishings. It is no exaggeration to say th * this popular establishment base” ‘af the, largest and best stocks in ‘side Dominion, and it is universally admitted that better value is to be obtained here than anywhere in the city.
