! Another Infernal Machine—Narrow Es-• caps—Escape of the'Villain.—On Monday (evening, about 9 o'clock, as Mr, Christopher ] Swishelm and his family, on Walnut, between Court and Ninth stree'ts. were seated in front of a blazing fire engaged in conversation, their attention was attracted by the noise of something coming down the chimney. The instant it struck the fire it ignited and rolled on to the i floor. Fortunately Mr. S. immediately threw the ‘ball of fire’ iri'o a pail of water, and extinguished it. Upon examination it was found to be a ball of cotton saturated with turpentine. In the center or the ball was a heavy charge of gunpowder, and several slugs. A young man who has h:en at enmity with the Swishelm family for some time, and who was ! seen yesterday, but ha: since disappeared, is j suspected of 'the act. It seems that he went up on to the top of tl* house and threw the ball down the chimney, supposing that when it struck the fire an explosion would take place,, i and the death of those who wen* seated oppor-! site the fire would be the result.—Cin.
