Jones—Faces Death Resolutely.NIGHT OF CARNAGE ON THE HORNAfter boarding a West-bound passenger train at Keystone, attempting to kill ( apt. McCulloch and accidentally and probably fatally shooting Mr. W. H. Strother Alex. Jones, a negro desperado, was taken from the officers and his body riddled with bullets. The particulars were published in yesterday’s issue of the Telegraph” exclusively. The report of Mr. Strother’s killing, as he was reported killed, spread along the horn” like wildfire, and the populace as one man, with no preconcerted arrangement, tlocked to the scene wi .h grim desperation and determination npon their countenances. Jones was quietly removed from jail at Welch and placed on No. 8 fur transportation to Chasleston for safe keeping; but the intention was divulged to the mob, who stopped the train at Hemphill and took the manacled negro from the officers, led him up a rugged pathway a distance of some two hundred yards from the railroad, bound him to a small bush, then poured into his body a shower of lead from every conceivable shooting iron. The terrified negro cried aloud in his agony, but his dying groans and prayers for mercy were lost amidst the roar of musketry, and long before the echoes died out across the mountains his soul bad been launched into eternity. Upon his mutilated body was pinned a placard of warning to all who attempt to destroy life; and with his intestines pro trnding, his head splintered by balls, his body full of gaping wounds he was left lying where they had tied him to be viewed by hundreds of people who flocked to the scene. Until a late hour yesterday the horribly distorted mass of what was once a human being was stilt untouched and the bloody minded could find here an ample mess upon which to feed their curiosity. Up until the time of going to press Mr. Strother, for whose killing Jones was butchered, was still alive with fair chances of xecovery. Never in the history of this section has such an out break of vengeance been given full swing, and the negroes of Elkhorn are all badly scared up.
