HamiltonMOKENA - Two Mo ken agirls were injured, one seriously . when ihe car in which they were ndmg was struck bv a Rock Island freightmtram on the unguarded Hamilton St. crossing, just outside the western edge of thevillage, late Mondas afternoon (Jan .19).Driver of the car and leastseriously injured was Deborah Deems, 19, of 25 Elmwood Dr .. Bright wood. The passenger was Jackie M. Ecrro. 19. of 19440 Beechnut Dr., Arbury Hills. The Ferrogirl was in the intensive care section of Silver Cross Hospital, Joliet, but was transferred to regular care Thurs-da.According to the police report she has a skull fracture. a broken arm. and internal iniuncs that required surgery The spleen had ruptured and there was other abdominal damage that had to be repaired. She was released from the hospital last Thursdaymorning.Police Chief Wayne Ryder has been urging protection for this crossing for a long time Gates and flasher lights are needed, he believes, or at least flasher lights and a bell.The road over the railroad tracks there runs at an angle off Francis Rd Ryder pointed out that one has to pull out on the tracks to lookbackward to see approachingtrams from either side of the crossing and in his opinion the crossing is e*lemely hazardousIn the tram - car collision last week, the automobile was crossing the tracks from the Francis Rd side, in a southeasterly direction. The tram, traveling east, was running at 45 m.p.h., according to Ryder s repirt.W itncsses said that the engine whistle was sounded m short blasts several timeswhile the tram was two or three blocks away. Then along blast was sounded thatlasted until the tram was atthe crossing.Whether the occupants ofthe car were engrossed in conversation and with the windows closed did not hear the whistle was not learned.That they apparently did not see or hear the tram wasidencedthe fact thatwitnesses said the auto came up the approach at low speed, wobbled up and overthe tracks into the path of the tram.The engine struck the car in the middle of the right side and shoved it along the rails for more than a block, to a point opposite the car washbuilding on Front St. ChielRyder reasoned that the snow and ice along the tracks kept the car upright and enabled it to slide. Mo ken a firemen removed the occupants from the auto.The accident occured at 5:18 p.m. and tied up traffic on the railroad for over anhnitr
