The reception committee formed to greet Lord Eipon and Mr. John Morley is a triumph. All the “light and leading” of Dublin and Ireland from every class, lights of the church, of the bench, of the bar, and of the commercial world, have given in their adhesion to the pohcy of the Liberal party. The “Unionist” demonstrators have 6imply to put out their rushlights of display against the sun of Nationalist enthusiasm.—:o:—We are told that several of those who have sent in their names to the Eipon and Morley Eeception Committee are but recent converts to Home Buie. This is a striking testimony to the growing popularity of Mr. Gladstone’s Irish policy, and bears equal testimony to the destestation felt by all the better classes of the Irish people towards the brutal and barbarous policy of Mr. Balfour.—:o:—What wonder is it that the,humane portion of Britishers are daily becoming converts to Home Eule ? Just read the Irish News supplied us every day in the London Press. Not a day passes but witnesses some outrage upon the Bense of justice and of humanity in the hearts of all civilised peoples. Witness the dastardly and inhuman treatment of Mr. W. J. Lane, M.P., by Balfour’s myrmidons. I am sure I shall be excused if I quote here the report of the medi?al gentleman who this week visited Mr. Lane: “ I found Mr. Lane in close confinement to his cell, undergoing 48 hours bread and water, inflicted on him in Cork by the deputy-govemor for refusing to clean his cell. Mr. Lane stated that he had not slept since his incarceration (now eight days), that he had no exercise during that period, and had been on bread-and-water six of the eight days. He complained of soreness in the bones snd muscles, and a tired feeling in consequence of the treatment. . . . The loss of rest,” continuesDr. Hooper’s report, “ deprivation of exercise, and a dietry insufficient to support the vital energies, must rapidly, if persevered in, tell injuriously on his physical and mental system.” .... And, may we ask, what crime he, Mr. Lane, committed to incur this monstrous punishment—murder ? robbery ? outrage ?—no, neither; he simply was guilty of nothing greater than turning a deaf ear to those who were appealing to him to hold his tongue on the Cork scandals^; but he would not; he would do his level best to bring to justice he, whom he believed to be a nasty and foul offender, and for this he is, by Mr. Balfour, treated in the manner Dr. Hooper describes.—:o:—How would it be taken here in England ?—:o:—Again, read this: “In consequence of the civilians who reside on the Government Island of Fort Westmoreland, in Queenstown Harbour, manifesting their joy at Mr. O’Brien’s release, by lighting tar barrels, the general commanding the Cork military district has served notice on every resident civilian to quit the island. The first eviction, that of ft man with a wife and family, was carried out yesterday.” What think ye of this ? If such a piece of news was wired here by Beuter, and from Bussia, even the Tories, I do believe, would cry “ shame,” but being done in Ireland and by tbe Tory Government, we are told by “ cheat Goschen,” that it is a glorious government by “Brave Balfour,” and deserving the confidence of tbe English people.—:o:—Put Goschen in Lane’s place, under the same circumstances ; I wonder would he then shriek out “ Good master, brave Balfour ? ”(«laClisttbebihiheofinttlraieltlpiaiaifrn6’tl1(1Sit;
