, The house owned by slain civil rights leader Medgar Evers -TANNEN MAURY The Associated PressEvers’ neighborhood becomes historic districtBy The Associated PressJACKSON — The neighborhood where NAACP field secretary Medgar Evers was killed and author Margaret Walker Alexander t lives is now part of Jackson’s first historic district.City Council members unanimously approved Tuesday an ordinance designating 45 homes as the Medgar Evers Neighborhood Historic District The houses are in the Elraine subdivision.City officials said the timing of the honor is incidental to the third trial, now under way, of r white supremacist Byron De La Beckwith. Beckwith is accused of the 1963 assassination of Evers in * the driveway of his home.Two all-white juries in 1964 failed to reach verdicts. Testimony in the third trial of Beckwith, 73, of Signal Mountain,Tenn. was to begin today in a Hinds County courtroom.Pam Pendergrass of the Historic Preservation Commission said the district deserved preserving “for its historic personages connected to Medgar Evers and Margaret Walker Alexander and for its cultural and social significance because of its association with the Civil Rights Movement.’’The designation permits the commission to review any design changes such as major alterations, new constructions, movingor demolitions in the neighborhood, Pendergrass said.Grace Sweet, a member and long-time neighborhood resident, told council members the honor perpetuates “the name, the life and the work that Medgar Evers did, keeping it visible.”“It will also help to restore the neighborhood to the beautiful status that it once had and hopefully crime will be deterred because when you fix up, clean up and make things beautiful that seems to deter crime,” Sweet said.Superstart!For people I in a hurry to start losing weight.For meeting inlo call in Jackson 982-5783Toll Free in Mississippi 1-800-289-8446
