Thomas tied with teammate Richard Johnson for the highest scoring on his team, with each scoring 14 points.Close contest ends with ACC lossWharton takes 70-65 inter-conference winBy TED DUNN AM Sports EditorMelvin Young’s steal and ensuing layup ended a seesaw battle and sent the Wharton Pioneers to a 70-66 interconference win over the Alvin Community College Dolphins Monday night.The Dolphins led only twice in the second half, the final time coming when Doug Anderson put in a short banker with 110 remaining for a 65-64 ACC lead.Michael Hubbard countered for Wharton as his jumper in the lane put the Pioneers ahead to stay 66-65 with 46 seconds leftACC brought the ball up-court in an attempt to score the go-ahead basket but Richard Johnson’s pass was deflected and Young sprinted in for a layup for a 68-65 edge with 26 ticks left.The Dolphins tried valiantly in the remaining seconds to get a field goal but another turnover resulted instead, and Glen Williams scored a meaningless field goal with nine seconds showing.Wharton’s biggest lead in the second half was 59-51 -Young accounting for that on a pair of free throws. The margin was the largest lead by either team.The Pioneers led by as much as seven points in the first half and settled for a 40-34 advantage at intermission. The teams were tied at 20 and at 24 but the Dolphins couldn’t gain the lead in the first half after the score was knotted for the second time.Johnson pulled ACC withinACC victorious in Dolphin ClassicScoring a school-record 71 points in the second half, Alvin C immunity College won the Dolphin Classic this weekend with a 115-92 drubbing of Dallas North I-ake.ACC’s two tournament wins, which included a 71-45 triumph of Brookhaven Friday, pushed the Dolphins’ season record to 12-11.Dolphins Ned Pleasant and Richard Johnson were named to the all-tournament team.ACC did all its scoring without pressing North Lake but the Dolphins shot 61 percent from the field in thefirst half and 62 percent in the final 20 minutes.it was a great game for the fans,” coach Gary Coffman said. “When we put in our quicker people, we played better defense.
