THOMAS DARBY CALLED HOMEFormer Resident of Clinton County Dies in Fort Wayne, Ind., This Week— Had Peculiar History.From the Fort Wayne. Ind., News is taken the following story of the !death of Thomas Darby, a [this county. The article in the News gives an interesting aeoount of the ; man’s unusual life and work. The Indiana paper says:“Thomas (’. Darby, aged eighty-seven years, a veteran of the Civil War, builder of the church in Louisiana, in which the daughter of Jefferson Davis worshipped, and who voted for Abraham Lincoln, and all succeeding Republican Presidential candidates, including Charles Evans Hughes, died shortly before 1 o’clock this morningj at the home of his daughter, Mrs. William S. Whiteman, 807 Huffman street. Death was due to complications, arising from the infirmities of old age.“Mr. Darby was born in Clinton County, Ohio. August 21. 1829. When a young man he went South and re sided in Louisiana for a period of two years. During this time he built the historic church in Louisiana which was attended by the daughter o’' Jefferson Davis. In that structure, the daughter of the President of the Confederacy, secretly taught the negroes how to read and write, which at that time was against the State law of Louisiana. Mr. Darby often told of how kindly and sympathetically Miss Davis was disposed toward the slaves, and how in many ways she strove to better their condition.“Some months before the outbreak of the war of the Rebellion. Mr. Darby , returned to his Northern home, inOhio, and at the beginning of hostilities. enlisted as a private in the 149th O. V. I. He served throughout the entire war, nad participated in some of the bloodiest battles without even being injured. On one occasion his regiment was so hard pressed by the enemy that tin1 men were compelled to abandon all their equipment, in order to effect their escape.“At the conclusion of the war, he returned to his boyhood home, where he resided until fourteen years ago, when lie moved to Fort Wayne to make his home with bis daughter. He was a member of the Trinity M K. Church and of the G. A. R. He was the last of a family of fourteen children and is survived by the following children: William E. Darby and Mrs. native of Joseph Doak, of Rofdnson. 111.; A. S.Darby, Superintendent of public schools at Comanche, Okla., and Mrs. William Whiteman, of this city, at whose home he died. Seven grandchildren and two great grandchildren also survive.”■■98SiIIB
