- LAZT02T A27D THE 27ZPZSSZ27 ILZLBelow we give the report of the deputation sent by the Council of Lax ton Digby and Longford to try to effect on arrange-e raent with the Board of the Toronto and a Nipissing Railway, j To the Municipal Council of Laxtun, lt;Lc. ;L-j Gextlxmex—Your deputation proceeded themselves in communication with theat once, on their appointment, to placerailway board. They arrived in Toronto on Tuesday evening and on Wcdncs day morning had an interview with the obliging President, who called a meeting of his board for that afternoon. At 3 t I o’clock we had the pleasure of meeting the I 1 entire board, with the execution of the impulsive George Laidlaw, and Joseph Gould, Esq. Your deputation were very kindly and obligingly received, and were fully permitted to set forth their views, the positionof their municipality, its requirements and resources, and secure the views of the board in return. It was painfully evident that the members of the board, with two exceptions, were totally unacquainted with the geography and resources of your section of the country, and were not even aware that in return for our large bonus tee required them to extend their railway to Norland, The next day your deputation had an interview in the office of the President with that gentleman, Geo. Laidlaw and J. E. Smith, Esos. After discussing the various points the President submitted the following memorandum for our consideration, and also agreed to call a full meeting of his board for the next day at three o'clock, at which we were invited to be present “ It is hereby agreed that, if the Council of Lax ton ratify their By-law granting a bonus of §25,000 to aid in the construction of \IPao1lt;ko:flt;ua)ub«tlitCh-d;(hmB1cc\\althe third section of the Toronto and Nipis-' sing Railway, the Company will agree to spend fivo thousand dollars in the construction of an extension to Norland during theyear 1870, andwrill givoa bond to complete the line to Norland within eighteen months after the ro d is in running ojder to Cobo-conk, or to return five thousand dollars intwenty year bonds of the Company, with interest at six per cent., to the township.Your deputation, after fully considering the above memorandum, agreed to accept its terms, if the board would make a few alterations. They therefore submitted the following, as their views :—“It is hereby agreed that, if the Council of Laxton ratify their By-law granting a bonus of twenty-five thousand dollars to aid in the construction of the third section of the Toronto and Nipissing Railway, the Company will agree to spend .vren thousand dollars in the construction of an extension to Norland during the year 1870. and will give*a bond to complete the line to Norland, and have a regular station there, within three years from date. ”On your deputation coming before the board at the appointed time, it soon be- j came evident that the enemy, in the person i of George Laidlaw. hail been among them, and had been sowing Vires. He having just returned from the County of Norfolk, where he was defeated on tfyat County’s By-law, was fully prepared to be as ungracious and insulting as is his nature to be, and it was very soon apjiarent that at that mee ting our views were wider ajvart than at the first After a very short discussion, the fallowing resolutions were passed by the Board :—“ Moved by John Shedden, seconded by j li* Win. Gooderham, That on condition that ! C. George Laidlaw will be moved from the board of the Toronto and * m ipissing Railway, to some other railway, afflict it for a season, (probably the Norik and Brantford) and that when that ent takes place, wiser and more consist- i 11 t actions will prevail, for we are satisfied ! •at every other gentleman on the board is [ v xious to do what isjright.and is not govern- : u V, by prejudice and vindictiveness. JYour deputation discussed the question j ? ^ giving a part of our bonus, say fifteen p ;usand dollars, to aid in the building of j 5 road to Coboconk. This proposition i i board would not entertain at all. They j t-°t J d they were not willing to accept of any ! n, less tlian the sum voted on by your j . tnicipality. We fully presented before ,.‘s :m our ability, as compared with Brock, . .w, n m whom they had accepted 88,000 less in their quota ; Eldon, $14,000 less than I1}, v ;ir quota, and Somerville, 813,000 less ! ’ °fin their quota. It was lt;-f no avail.
