Harpsichordist Igor Kipnis will be the guest soloist with the Arctic Chamber Orchestra on Sunday, Jan. 28 at 4 p.m. at the Fine Arts Concert Hall at the University of Alaska. Conductor Gordon B. Wright has selected “Music of the Baroque Masters” as the theme of the program. IGOR KIPNIS “The foremost harpsichordist of the day” (Time Magazine, 1975). Igor Kipnis has per formed since his debut in 1959 as recitalist and as soloist with orchestras throughout the United States, Canada, Europe, South America, Israel and Aus tralia. He has made 35 solo LP’s receiving numerous Gram my Award nominations; the Deutsche Schallplatten Prize in 1969; and the Stereo Review Record of the Year Award in 1971, 1972, and 1975. Kipnis hosted his own radio program, “The Age of Baroque” for three seasons. In addition to editing music anthologies on the harpsichord, Kipnis edited Tele mann’s music and serves as con tributing editor for “Stereo Re view He is the son of the former Metropolitan Opera Bass Alex ander Kipnis, and is a graduate of Harvard University. His most recent appearance as orchestra soloist have included perform ances with the New York Philharmonic, the Chicago, Min nesota, National, Baltimore, Denver, Seattle, and Pittsburgh Symphonies, and the Los An geles and St. Paul Chamber Orchestras. The program will open with Georg Phillip Telemann’s “Musique De Table,” a suite of dances. Kipnis will be the soloist in J.S. Bach’s “Concertos in G Minor and D Minor.” The pro gram will conclude with Bach’s “Brandenburg Concerto No. 5 in D Major” featuring Igor Kipnis, harpsichord; Rose-Marie John son, violin; and Sheila D. Hille, flute. For this performance Kipnis is playing a harpsichord by Frank Hubbard, a double man ual French model after Taskin. The instrument was constructed by Jay Brause. On Thursday, Jan. 25 at 8 p.m. at the Wood Cen ter Ballroom, Kipnis will give a two-hour lecture on Baroque Aesthetics and Arts utilizing slides and taped music. This is open to the public and free.
