Douglas iVan Gessel, pastor of the Church of the Hill in Norco, Reserve Fund chairman for the Norco area.Mrs. Martinez will be available to interpret for Spanish speaking blood donors, shesaid. 'The Settlement House, which now provides food and clothing to families who need emergency aid, will now try to provide the blood needs of the community through its Reserve Fund.The Reserve Fund will operate through the Blood Bank of San Bernardino and Riverside Counties. Corona-Norco area donors will be requested to donate blood at the donor center off the freeway near the Adams exit in Riverside, Mrs. Maddox said. Interested persons may obtain complete details by calling her at the Settlement Houseor Rev. Van Gessel at 737-3172.Mrs. Maddox said that more than 13,000 pints of blood are transfused every day in the United States. Though the demand for blood increases, it is estimated that the annual blood requirements of the nation are provided by less than three per cent of theeligible donor population, she added. Giving blooa is safe anlt;5 safe and easy, she went on to say. An average person has about 10 to 12 pints in his body. A normal donation is a|xut one pint.Medical authorities say that donating a unit of blood quickly stimulates a healthy person’s bone marrow and his blood count is as normal after the donation as before. Under medical supervision, the collection of blood is made by a nurse or technician.
