Some authors will not be represented upon its shelves. The skeptical will seek in vain for Paines, Hume and Voltaire. The puriantwill not here debase his mind with poisonous literature, but all our people of all ages will come upon such dramas of human existence, such portrayals of social reforms, and such veracious descriptions of men, manners and real life as will inspire, instruct and uplift their minds and cheer them on to do their part for self, society and their country.Fiction will abound and attract now and hereafter as it has done in all times past. What pleasant memories are associated with the Arabian nights and Robinson Crusoe, as well as The Quest of John Chapman and The Calling of Dan Matthews. Wanting the works of the story-writer the library doors would close for lack ofpatronage.The auditory is a delightful surprise and much-needed convenience. The public look forward to City Hall and new Court House. There is an opera house for playgoers and churches for denominations and happily, thelibrary auditory gives ideal opportunity for lecture and address and dispassionate discussion of moral and social questions. Elsewhere, dissent and controversy may mark dfference of opinion but the auditory will recognizeequal privilege to all and seek the greatest good for the greatest number.Walls of state and nation’s capi-tols are fittingly adorned by paintings of distinguished public men, and in line with this expression of pride and appreciation, the portrait of Charles Eckhart has been gracefully procured by Auburn citizens to be given honored place in the building of his creation.Long after all present shall have passed the mystip portal of Time into the real unknown, posterity will frequent this library and regard with interest the features of its founder as ofone whose love to man and home was very great.From Caleb Bingham of Salisbury, Connecticut, who gave the first youth’s library to this country, down to our townsman, to whom Auburn stands in-MRS. DR. LIDA LEASUBEdebted for a noble gift, no public benefactor has lived in vain.He who in all lands and ages has sought to better humanity has fairly won both grateful approval and lasting remembrance.
