Display of Arts and Crafts Work! Attracted Many—Sales Were ~ Gratifying. Many persons who had planned to at~ tend the exhibition of the Arts and Crafts society today were sadly disappointed when they heard that the exhibition had been closed. ‘The society is not a large r one and the burden and responsibility of showing such a collection of artistic work was too great for the members to carry any longer. The attendance was unusual ly large. Many of the visitors had never heard of an arts and crafts exhibition and asked all sorts of amusing questions In regard to its purpose and object. ‘They could not, understand why no admission fee was charged and seemed to be sus picious of the fact that they were re ceiving “something for nothing.” How ever it is just such persons whom the members of the society hope to reach and A wider Interest In the work of the bandi craftaman will result from the exhibition. ‘Though the sates were not pressed in the least it was important that they should be late enough to encourage people to continue to send exhibits. The regard was quite gratifying. Almost before the exhibition opened a man seeing Jessie M. Preston's three branch electric lamp, said to a young woman near “I will take that lamp. Startled,he made some remark about looking up the price of it, but he stopped her, saying “Never mind, just mark it sold anyway,” and it was forth ywith marked sold. Another important sale was a beautiful writing cabinet co ered with green ooze and trimmed In «metal work and pine cone applique by Charles Eaton. x ‘Among the visitors yesterday, was Mis dessie Preston of cCicago whose work In brofize and jewelry has mades very fa vorable impression. By preferencé, Misa Preston works chiefly in the baser metals and semi-precious stones évén In her Jew elry. ‘The arrangements of the exhibition and the display, of article’ “were highly praised by the Chicago visitor.
