Mapleton: Telegraph Op erator Shot in the Streets, (Special Dispatch to The Journal.) Mapleton, Ta., Jan. 24.—1. DP. Mur phy, 28 years old, who was shot horn Friday night while walking on the street with three companions, died of his wounds at 2 o'clock this aft ernoot, Tis slayer, Merlen Chapin, 30 years old, fa tn jail here. A herrings will be held Monday, it was Indicated, and until then no for mal charge will be preferred against the man, but it is beleved the hear ing will take the form of insanity proceedings. Jack Greer, 25, and Merwin Prad field, 19, also were victims of the man, receiving ‘wounds in their hands. Their condition is not se rous. They were with Murphy at the time of the shooting and scuffled with Chapin after he had shot Mur phy, L. F. Simph, coming to the aid of the men, knocked Chapin un conscious with a blow to the jaw and the gun was taken from him. Chapin, It is said, is the son of a former publisher of a newspaper here. Murphy was n telegraph oper ator for the Chicago, Milwaukee and St. Paul railway.
