The comet which passed its perihelion —its nearest approach to the aim—on November 15, 1835, was named after one of the greatest English astronomers—Dr Hailey—who lived from 165(5 to 1742. It was he who first proved that many appearances of comets were only periodical returns of the same bodies. Before his time, the sight of a comet was usually the signal for great alarm, and any incident that- was at all out of the common was invariably attributed to. its influence. After Dr. ^Hailey had made careful in-yestigations, he boldly declared Ms belief!*■that the comet which in 1682 was exciting so much alarm among the observers was the same which had appeared in 1456, 1531, and 1607, and he predicted its return in. 1758-9, So sure was he that hissurmise was correct that he appealed to posterity not to lose sight of the fact that, if the comet should really return at that period, the prediction of such a result was due to an Englishman. His prophecy did come true, for the comet reappeared in the year he mentioned—1759—and. tliis fact tended to dispel mxtejh of»the vague fear that comets had, before tliia period, excited. Naturally* a regular and periodical occurrence of the phenomenon dispels the mystery that encircles a vague and erratic appearance. The revolution of Hailey’s comet appears to be performed in about seventy-five years as it returned once more in 1835, and will probably be seen again in 1910-11.ao6-1clt;scClApplied c induces Frlt; A CURE!DANNEVIFKE 1 PANYTelephone 123* *Purveyors q£ Plight* B£jOAL, COKE,delivered in any part lt;at the following ratesCoal 45s per tonflrtlrfl 12 ha era ah.
