■EXTENSIVE FIRE IX WHITECHAPEL.. * • * * •A fire, involving a great loss of property, and nearlyconsuming goods in other parts of the premises, broke out ou Saturday morning in the extensive brush and mat manufactory b.elongiug to Messrs. Smith and Co. The discovery was made by a police constable of the H division, who at once sounded his rattle, - which brought Mr. Superintendent White, aud a powerful body of police to the spot, as well as Conductor Samuel Wood with the Royal Society’s escape. Two engines of the parish aud several manual working engines of the brigade, and the powerful land steam-engine 'built. by Shand and Mason, followed in rapid succession, under the direction of Captain Shaw and Foremen Bridges and Gerrard^By the time the firemen arrived the whole building presented a slioct of flame, and as the fire rose, bundles of bristles were forced like rockets high iuto the air, and when the bandages round them gave way, the hog’s hair in a perfect blaze kept dropping, similar in effect to some grand pyrotechnic display, such as is frequently witnessed at our public gardens. These tilings falling upon the house of Mr. H. J. Adams and the stock in Messrs. Smith's open yard, it was feared that every house withiu a radias of a quarter of a mile would, have been levelled to the ground. Fortunately a good supply of the East London Company’s water having been obtained, the engines were set to work, and copious streams were thrown not only into the blazingbuildings, but also over these surrounding, by which expedient Captain Shaw with great tact succeeded in saving from destruction the houses numbered 95, 90, and 97 opposite, let out in tenements. By great perseverance the lire was entirely extinguished before ten o’clock, but not until the first-named building, and several other premises belonging to the neighbours damaged. The losses Will fall on the Royal Leeds and Yorkshire Fire offices. The property on the premises was worth' £20,000, and only £4,000 insurance was affected.
